    hello Steve, apparently there is a certain frequency at which the filter of the DPF gets cleaned without affecting the protection surface that the filter is treated that has to remain un-affected. My findings are that the detrimental frequencies would be 20-25 kHz. All other higher frequencies are better tolerated by the filter..

    thanks for the subtitles, I was able to watch the video from Italy. Unfortunately my VW Polo 1.4 TDI has a DPF/catalytic converter which is very difficult to remove, it requires hours of work and a mechanic, it would be interesting to be able to use a less effective substance for periodic cleaning , easy to use, for example through the differential pressure sensor tube, without dismantling anything, not even lambda probes and temperature sensors. I've seen videos of French people pouring liters of vinegar, resting for a few hours and starting the engine, I don't think they have too much chemical knowledge :) thanks and greetings from Italy

      Hi, Liqui Moly make an in-place DPF cleaner, but you would need to figure out a way to spray it in evenly, or buy their expensive spraying system. I have thought about adapting my system for 'in-place' cleaning, but my fear is that on some engines it would be very easy for someone to end up with a water filled engine! I didn't find vinegar to work all that well, but industrial coffee machine de-scaler could be adapted for in-place use, as long as you could spray in lots of water and detergent at the end to neutralise the acid. More experiments needed!

    • @StevenBTuner
      @StevenBTuner 10 днів тому

      Hi, if there is a lot of black soot, then you might need to do the first stage multiple times. After the first stage you should rinse thoroughly. After the acid stage, rinse with lots of water mixed with dishwashing liquid, and then hose with water for at least 10 minutes. When you put it back in the car, idle the car for 15 minutes to gently dry it out.

    Thanks for this. I have just moved to a 2017 euro6 diesel with all the gubbins (DPC+DEF+SCR), from a purely electromechanical 1997 diesel so am rapidly learning about a whole new world of computer-mediated anti-pollution systems! I was not aware that glowplugs were now important beyond starting, so thanks for that. Is this true on all cars? I read that at least Renault truck systems have a separate fuel injector in the exhaust before the DPC in order to raise the temp for regeneration. But obviously re-using the existing injectors and glowplug is cheaper and takes up no extra space, so maybe all cars do it this way? Do you know when this started? Since DPFs were fitted, or was it a later innovation after designers learned that they tend to clog up, at least for some types of usage. I found a glowplug DTC on my new van, so I've replaced it anyway (not _too_ painful on a Vivaro-B 1.6 R9M). Now I know that was well worth doing.

    • @StevenBTuner
      @StevenBTuner 13 днів тому

      Hi, there are quite a few ways it can be done, and glow plugs aren't as critical for cars after 2010, or so, as pretty much all vehicles were fitted with catalysers, which will ignite the extra diesel fuel without needing extra help from the glow plugs. However if the ECU finds that the exhaust temperature is not rising fast enough then it may very well add glow plugs to the mix - and you'd have to dig deep into the software for your individual vehicle to find this kind of thing out...

      Part-changers who are just reading what do to from DT Codes. There seems to be a depressing lack of actual understanding of the systems and interactions between the components.

    Very nice but please wear safety glasses and chem. resistent gloves (Category III), preferably the long ones up to the elbow. Beside your old coverall i recommend also a chem. resistent skirt pr a proper raincoat (the heavy plastic type) During work you dont realize the small splashes which penetrate the textile webbing and come in contact with your skin. Even small amounts of chemicals are bad for your skin and ever person reacts different.

      @xxwookey 13 днів тому

      Yeah. I'm not big on safety myself but even I would have used some goggles and chunkier gloves. But full credit for doing this testing. The later testing he did with a chopped-up DPF suggests that one could just use a less aggressive acid and it would still work well, especially i you are not in too much of hurry.

    Using a 7% oxalic acid solution to clean your diesel particulate filter (DPF) requires following the correct sequence of steps to achieve the best results and minimize the risk of damage. Your suggested process is generally correct, but let's refine it and provide clear steps: ### The correct sequence of actions: 1. **Primary DPF regeneration**: - Carry out active or forced regeneration to remove as much soot as possible. - This will help prepare the filter for chemical treatment. 2. **Use of 7% oxalic acid solution**: - Inject 7% oxalic acid solution into the DPF through the temperature or pressure sensor hole. - Let the solution work for 15-30 minutes to dissolve carbon and tar deposits. 3. **Washing with water**: - Rinse the filter thoroughly with plenty of water under pressure (do not exceed 3-4 bar) to remove acid residues and dissolved contaminants. - Make sure that all acid and contaminants are removed from the filter. 4. **DPF regeneration**: - Carry out a second regeneration to dry the filter and completely remove any remaining acid solution and decomposed contaminants. - This will help return the filter to full functionality. ### Additional recommendations: - **Safety**: Use protective gloves, glasses and clothing when working with acid. - **Ventilation**: Carry out work in a well-ventilated area or in the open air. - **Equipment**: Use specialized equipment for acid injection and water rinsing.

      I asked this in the GPT chat. Do you think I can do this?

    • @StevenBTuner
      @StevenBTuner 23 дні тому

      Hi, the process is 'interesting', but there are a few issues that could make it all go very wrong. The first is that sometimes a forced regeneration is not possible when the filter is extremely blocked. The second is that the process seems to be for in-place cleaning - and if you inject high pressure water it will probably want to go back through the turbo and into the engine rather than go through the blocked or semi-blocked filter.

    Thanks I cleaned my DPF using your suggestions. Caustic Soda, dishwasher tablets the pool acid at 1/4 dilution and got a stack of black sh!t out, not much orange ash though. Now I get no error codes and runs great. Cheers for that.

      Hi, it is the intercooler that wears away, so a new intercooler is needed every 10 years or so - or the fix I have used, or do a completely custom solution.

    Is parts cleaner OK for DPF's ? I've been using degreaser as a pre wash but wondered about parts cleaner. Love your work!

    • @StevenBTuner
      @StevenBTuner 28 днів тому

      Hi, degreaser is perfect for oily soot if there is any. You'd have to look up the ingredients to make a good decision about how safe it is for your environment. There is no need to use substances that burn or explode when you don't have to.

    Please forgive me question as I'm not mechanic, but from where this fuel goes to testing tubes ? And what is this tubes disconnected and putted into the white canister. I don't get it....and how is engine running if fuel goes into testing tubes...is this some excess of the fuel ?

    • @StevenBTuner
      @StevenBTuner Місяць тому

      Hi, this fuel is from the 'return' connection on each fuel injector - it is fuel that travels through the injector to keep it cool, and then it travels back to the fuel tank.
